TaeKwonDo History
Taekwondo History or Definition
The name “Taekwondo” comes from the Korean words “Tae” which means foot, “Kwon” which means fist, and “Do” which means the way of. So, when you put it all together, Taekwondo literally means “the way of the foot and fist.”
Although the name Taekwondo has only been in use since 1955, its roots actually trace back 2,300 years ago in Korea. This martial art has a rich and fascinating history that has evolved over centuries.
Taekwondo can be traced back to ancient Korean martial arts styles that were developed for self-defense and combat. These styles were influenced by various factors such as indigenous Korean fighting techniques, Chinese martial arts, and even early Japanese Karate.
Over time, Taekwondo went through several transformations. In the early 20th century, it became more focused on developing mental and physical strength, discipline, and self-control. It wasn’t until the 1950s that Taekwondo took the name we know today and became an officially recognized martial art.
Since then, Taekwondo has gained incredible popularity globally and has become an Olympic sport. It emphasizes agility, speed, and powerful kicks, making it both a fantastic form of self-defense and a highly competitive sport.
Today, Taekwondo is practiced by millions of people around the world, from children to adults. It not only helps to build strength, flexibility, and self-confidence but also instills important values such as respect, perseverance, and discipline.
So next time you see someone practicing Taekwondo or hear the word mentioned, now you know a little more about its history and significance. It truly is a remarkable martial art that continues to inspire and empower people across the globe.
